Will on-site testing technology replace factory testing?

Today, testing HV equipment in the factory is crucial to evaluate the quality of the product. Beside HV testing other measures of quality could also be implied to change from testing quality to manufacturing quality. As transportation and installation causes very high stress to the installed grid components, most likely an on-site-test is required to prove the proper installation. Going forward like that we would like to discuss the options to improve the utilization of the test systems. Implementing new and advanced quality controls in the production process might allow to do HV testing after installation only. Vice versa a flexibilisation of test equipment to be used in the factory as well as on-site could be required. Here, cost optimization will be key, anticipating failure and investment costs.

Statement

On-site testing technology will offer much higher flexibility for nearly identic testing conditions. In the course of modularization, the difference between lab and on-site testing will fade. In parallel, automatization of the production line and high quality standards will waive factory acceptance testing towards site testing. 

Vita

Dr. Alexander Winter has studied High Voltage Electrical Engineering at the University in Dresden. He continued his scientific career at the Institute for High Voltage Engineering in Munich and achieved his PhD degree in 2003. In 2003, he started as a Sales and Project Manager at HIGHVOLT. In 2011, he joined Siemens as Director Sales and Project Management. In 2015, he returned to HIGHVOLT where he now heads the Regional Sales Management for Middle East, Americas and parts of Europe. Dr. Winter can refer to more than 50 scientific papers and presentations at national and international Conferences and is an active Member of IEEE Transformers Committee.

Statement

On-site-testing to verify the proper installation and condition of components, but also the proper installation and design of a power system with interacting components, is very useful. But is a replacement of the factory routine test on components like for example power transformer useful, considering not only technical but also other aspects like: contractual boundaries, legal and conformity assessments, product safety and economical boundaries ?

Vita

Jens Tepper was appointed as Professor in the faculty of electrical engineering at the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences in Wolfenbüttel/Germany in 2019. He is also the head of the High Voltage Laboratory. Since approx. 9 years he is active in international power transformer standardization (IEC TC14, TC 112 and CLC TC14 in several WGs) with a focus on energy efficiency and dry type transformer. Since 2015 he is the chairman of the German national committee on power transformer standardization, K321. From 2009 to 2019 he was the head of the Development Centre for Dry Type Transformers in Brilon at the ABB AG in Germany. During this time he worked in the field of energy efficiency and dielectric optimization of transformer and on transformer for special applications, like for example Smart Grids. During 2002 to 2009 he worked at the Corporate Research Centre in Baden-Dättwil at the ABB Switzerland Ltd on topics like high voltage circuit breaker and current limitation for power applications. He studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig with the main subjects of High-Voltage, Electric Power and Measurement Techniques where he graduated 1997 with a diploma. Afterwards he worked at the institute for High Voltage Technology and Electrical Power Systems at the TU Braunschweig in the field of gas discharges and received the Dr. degree in electrical engineering in 2002.

Vita

Hans-Dieter Schlemper received a PhD degree in electrical engineering from Stuttgart University for research about on-site partial discharge testing of GIS. He joined ABB in 1997 and held several positions as technology manager, R&D manager and product manager for high-voltage switchgear. Currently, he is chief engineer for GIS products.
