After the presentation, Dr. Stefan Schierig answered numerous questions from his highly interested audience.
Where power is transmitted by submarine cable, any disturbances or failures lead to significant costs. There is thus great interest in the possibilities to detect potential defects in cables by way of offline high-voltage tests.
At the Second Annual Advanced Submarine Power Cable & Interconnection Forum in London, Dr. Stefan Schierig was able to offer efficient solutions. “With the aid of suitable high-voltage tests, it is possible to perform on-site tests on submarine power cables,” he said. “Any weak points in the cables can thus already be revealed as breakdowns before commissioning.” There is always a risk that cables may be damaged during transport or submarine laying. Testing of the installed cables before commissioning is thus very much recommended.
