The winner of the 2018 HIGHVOLT Award has been announced. Michael Bauer will be enjoying this recognition and the 1,000 euros that come with it. The graduate from the Electrical Engineering course at the TU Dresden University of Technology received the prize for his diploma thesis on “Measuring pulsed currents in mineral insulating oil when pre-breakdown occurs”. The electrical engineer studied electrical breakdown and discharge mechanisms. His work focused on the particular challenges posed by loads from voltage surges.

“This accolade came as a great surprise to me, but of course I am absolutely delighted”, the 32-year-old commented. The electrical engineer analysed electrical breakdown and discharge mechanisms. His work focused on the particular challenges posed by loads from voltage surges.

“Michael Bauer has developed three alternative methods to determine the charge from pre-breakdown currents. His investigations form an important basis for further research in the field of voltage surges on oil-paper insulation”, explained his supervisor Prof. Steffen Grossmann of the Chair of High Voltage and High Current Engineering at TU Dresden.

The HIGHVOLT Award, worth 1,000 euros, is awarded every year for diploma theses in the field of electrical engineering which bear testimony to an exceptional level of commitment and provide results and insights of practical relevance. Thomas Steiner, HIGHVOLT’s Technology Division Manager, presented the award on 28 September, an open day at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at TU Dresden.
