New HV test field at University of Applied Science Upper Austria
As part of an EU-funded project (Interreg project AB43), students and scientists are carrying out research to develop a high-voltage battery. The aim is to develop a reliable battery system that can be integrated directly into a medium-voltage DC system, creating high-performance units to store electrical energy, with excellent capacity at peak loads.
On-site testing of 66 kV subsea array cables
Offshore windfarms with extruded XLPE inter-array cables rated up to 66 kV will become increasingly common. IEC is anticipating the situation with a new standard – IEC 63026 (under development) – as a guideline for manufacturers, test service providers and operators. As a result, HIGHVOLT has developed a test system solution to meet these new requirements.
Breakdown localization - HiRES Locator
Where’s the breakdown? Finding breakdowns in kilometers of medium and high voltage cables is a little like finding a needle in the proverbial hay-stack. Until now, breakdowns could only be located off-line after a disruption had occurred. However, that makes measurement labor- and time-intensive, as extensive investigations are often required to find the breakdown.
Testing of super long cables
As a result of the changing ways in which society is consuming energy, the demand for ever longer cables is also increasing. The challenge is to manufacture and test cables that have such great lengths, and conventional systems can often reach their limits. The new testing system from HIGHVOLT is capable of testing extremely long cables with equipment that not only weighs less, but also takes up less space.

Around 400 people from all around the world were coming together in Hungary’s capital Budapest from 26 - 30 August for the 21st edition of ISH, the International Symposium on High Voltage Engineering. ISH takes place every two years and is designed as a forum for exchange and for discussion of research results between scientists and engineers. 328 papers were presented at this year’s symposium. 155 papers were presented in lectures and 173 as posters in a so-called Dialogue Session.
